Up a Creek Without the Hassle

Kayaking at sea is not quite the aggressive water-sport that it is in the rushing rapids of a river. Although both sports are enjoyed equally by both genders, a conglomerate of 24 Canada-based tour operators has put together a sea-kayaking retreat that strictly appeals to feminine pursuits.

Providing outfits, accommodations, meals, canoe and kayaking adventures, the Paddling Ontario Alliance is bundling a plethora of hikes and nature walks, cooking classes, yoga lessons and watercolor painting in awesome women-only kayaking trips in the Temagami region, where hundreds of lakes and rivers, connected by ancient portage trails, offer a host of paddling opportunities for beginner and expert alike. Among the wildlife encountered will be bear, beaver, wolf, moose, otter, lynx and fox, dwelling in the mixed and enchanting forest of spruce, pine, poplar and ash.

Among tour options are the Temagami Sister Holistic Spa Retreat, an easy, breezy weekend of great eats, massage, medicinal plant walks and watercolor instruction for only $220 per person. The Supermom and Daughter Canoe Trip is a four-day adventure revolving around native flora and fauna, freshwater swimming, and spiritual hiking through ancient pine forests. Campfire storytelling, singing and stargazing are balanced with chances to paint, bead and play while the young and the old bond. One highlight is the opportunity for a vision quest. The $555 set price includes food, dynamic guides, all gear, crafts, instruction and programs. The trip is scheduled for August 27-Sept. 2, 2006.

Other trips focus on yoga, pilates and organic cooking, or Sea-kayaking on the Georgian Bay along the shore of Lake Huron. There is even an all-women whitewater adventure which includes an exciting flight in a float plane. All these trips promote health, togetherness and an appreciation of the outdoors through camping, sport, and activity.

These trips give women a chance for closer relationships with one another while trying something different and thrilling with excess testosterone removed. We know you’ll miss us girls, but couldn’t we both use a little space from time to time?
